    SSH Short stay accommodations

    Reserved accommodation

Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences offers international students the opportunity to stay in one of three buildings: Hatta, Erasmus International House and Robert Baeldestraat.

Rental prices range from EUR 475 to EUR 715 per month depending on the building and size of the room. These rooms are offered by SSH, the largest provider of student accommodations in the Netherlands. Student residents can stay for a maximum of 1 year.  After this period, you should find a room or apartment on the private market; see Alternative Housing Providers. The SSH short stay accommodations include a furnished bedroom (bed, desk, chair, closet and lamp) and you will share the kitchen and bathroom with one or two other students (depending on the unit).

Please note that there are not enough rooms available for all international students. Students who are unable to book a room with SSH will have to find accommodation on the private market.

We advise you to start looking for accommodation as soon as possible. DO NOT wait for SSH registration to open before starting your search on the private market.

Important dates for the upcoming Spring 2025 semester

Wednesday, November 20th  The registration platform will open for all incoming students
Wednesday, November 27th, 12:00pm (afternoon) Dutch local time

The reservation/booking process starts for all incoming students

You may register any time between the 20th and the 27th of November. Registrations made before the 20th of November will not be approved. Please note that registering does not mean that you will be able to book a room, but it is necessary to receive access to the booking platform on the 27th of November. Registering allows you to take your time to review SSH’s housing offers, so that you’re able to make an informed decision when the booking platform opens.

It’s important to note that rooms are allocated based on the “type of resident” and “gender” that you provided during registration. This means that the rooms you see on offer will vary depending on these options.  It is not permitted to register for an exchange room if you are a full degree student; and vice versa . These registrations will not be approved.

After you registered, your will see that your registration status says “For approval”. In order to be able to book a room, your status needs to be set to “Approved” by the Centre of International Affairs at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. Although you are still allowed to register on November 27th , we advise you to register on November 26th at the latest, so we will have enough time to check your registration. Your approval will depend on whether or not you meet the eligibility criteria.

    Rooms reserved for minors

We have noticed that minors (students under the age of 18) face more difficulties finding rooms abroad than older students. Because of this, we reserve a limited amount of our rooms specifically for these students. Are you under the age of 18 at the start of your study program? Please follow the following steps: first, register as every other student, and try to book a room on November 27th, 12pm. If you are unable to book a room this way, please email us that same day on coia-housing@hr.nl. We will then try to manually assign a room to you, if available. Please note that we only reserve a limited amount of rooms for this purpose, based on a first-come, first-served principle. We cannot guarantee that every student under the age of 18 obtains a room this way.

    Registration Procedure

    1. Go to the SSH Registration Form.
    2. Fill in the required information. If you do not have a student number yet or don’t know your IBAN number, leave this field blank.
    3. If you are under 16 years of age, please contact SSH (rotterdam@sshxl.nl) and inform them of your age before completing your registration.
    4. Once you have registered, your status will be set to “For approval”. The Centre of International Affairs will verify the information you provided. If you are eligible, your status will be changed to “Approved”. You will be able to access the booking platform on the date that is applicable to you. If your status is not approved, you will receive a message explaining the reason. If you think the reason given is incorrect, please contact the housing team at coia-housing@hr.nl.

    Reservation Procedure

    1. Once your status is approved, you will have access to the booking platform on November 27th, 12:00pm, and you will have the chance to book a room.
    2. Please keep in mind that we do not have enough rooms for all international students, so not everyone will be able to book. The booking platform operates on a ‘first come, first served’ basis, but if too many students log in at the same time, some will be able to book, while others won’t.
    3. After reserving a room, you will have 24 hours to complete the downpayment. If the room is not paid for within 24 hours, your reservation will be cancelled and another student will have the opportunity to book that room. The required payments are: first month’s rent, last three month’s rent (so four months rent in total) and a reservation fee of 95 EUR. For 6-month contracts, SSH also charges a tax fee of 9% of the total rental amount. This tax fee does not apply to 12-month contracts. The downpayment can ONLY be completed by credit card. If needed, you can add a bedding package to your reservation, for 75 EUR. SSH will ensure this package is ready for you upon arrival. If you have further questions regarding the payments, please contact SSH directly (info@sshxl.nl).
    4. If you were unable to book a room, go into your SSH account to the page “My Details”. Here you can tick a box that will allow you to receive notifications when a room becomes available due to a cancellation or other reason.

    Rental Contracts

Rental contracts are for a set amount of time: either 6 or 12 months. Please note that these dates cannot be amended, and contracts for 6 months cannot be extended to 12 months (and vice versa).
You can terminate your booking up until four weeks before the start of your rental period. The downpayment will be refunded, but you will be charged a cancellation fee of 90 EUR, and the reservation fee (95 EUR) will not be refunded.
After this period, the contract can only be terminated early under special circumstances. This means that you have to complete the contract period, even if your programme ends earlier. If you want to terminate the contract before that time, the Centre of International Affairs has to approve your request, and you will have to pay a cancellation fee of 90 EUR. The contract cannot be canceled during the last two months of the rental period, regardless of the reason.

    Rental periods are as follows:

    Fall Semester
    2 August 30 January
    2 August 30 July
    Spring Semester
    1 February 30 July

As we are unable to offer rooms to all of our international students, some students will have to look for a room on the private market. Take a look for more information about alternative housing options in Rotterdam or read more information about neighbourhoods in Rotterdam
