Dr. Amos van Gelderen

Professor Language Acquisition and Development

Since 1 January 2010, Amos van Gelderen has been a professor in Language Acquisition and Development at the School of Education at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. At the Research Centre Urban Talent he supervises various research projects in the field of language acquisition and language teaching. He was a member of the continuous learning expert group (Cie Meijerink) and contributed to the advisory report for the reference levels Language.

About the professor

Amos van Gelderen (doctoral psychology 1982) has been working as a researcher in language education since 1985. He obtained his PhD in 1992 on a study into the assessment of pupils’ speaking skills at the end of primary school. In addition, he conducted research in primary, secondary and vocational education for various subjects of Dutch (as a first and second language), foreign language education and in the field of the relationship between language and business education. He was also involved in curriculum development and the design of language methods. He is currently project leader of the focus area "Literacy development of at-risk adolescents in multilingual contexts: A Tale of Three Cities". Since 1 January 2010, he has been a professor in Language Acquisition and Development at the School of Education at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. At the Research Centre Urban Talent he supervises various research projects in the field of language acquisition and language education both with external subsidies (Onderwijsbewijs, RAAK-PRO) and with internal subsidies (in particular four doctoral projects by lecturers of the School of Education and the School of Social Work). He was a member of the continuous learning expert group (Cie Meijerink) and contributed to the advisory report for the reference levels Language. He is also chairman of the annual HSN conference on the role of Dutch in primary, secondary and higher education.
