Frans Spierings obtained his PhD from Erasmus University in 1996 as a sociologist and methodologist of social scientific research. He wrote the dissertation ‘Using one’s own strength - an investigation into the daily lives of guest house dwellers’ (Op eigen kracht - een onderzoek naar het dagelijks leven van logementbewoners). In total, Frans Spierings wrote more than 15 books and 90 articles in books and magazines.
