Maarten Schmitt completed his master's degree in Physical Therapy at the Catholic University of Leuven. He obtained his PhD at the Faculty of Medicine of Utrecht University in 2010 on the thesis 'Understanding Functioning and Health in Patients with Whiplash Associated Disorders'. For a long time he combined his work as a physiotherapist with teaching at the Utrecht University of Applied Sciences.
