University types

Universities of Applied Sciences vs. Research Universities

Universities of applied sciences in The Netherlands (like Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences) offer programmes which focus on the practical application of arts and sciences. After graduation, students will obtain a bachelor or master degree, depending on the programme.

Getting practical work experience through internships is an important part of the professional study programmes offered at Universities of Applied Sciences. Furtermore, students will participate in many field projects where they will work alongside companies and organisations in the surrounding area of the university.

Next to the Universities of Applied Sciences, the Dutch system of higher education offers a different kind of eduction, the Research Universities. The Research universities are mainly responsible for offering research-oriented programmes in an academic setting.

Choosing for a University of Applied Sciences therefore very much depends on the type of education you prefer.
